UPDATE: Panda Not Scared of Earthquake But Still Incredibly Cute

CC1BC60A-0920-42EA-BAEF-ED6D94199D71.jpg

Well, well, well. It’s been up for just about ten minutes, and already it appears that the cutest picture EVER is in fact a FRAUD. Originally billed as a panda scared after the Japanese earthquake, turns out this picture is a LIE. I mean, the panda is hugging a guy, but not out of fear. Rather, OUT OF HUNGER. Yes, this picture dates back to 2006, and thankfully my friend Neil — who also happens to be the resident panda archivist of my group — pointed this out to me. Evidently the panda is actually clutching a leg to ask for food.

Ah, but maybe the panda was hungry in the wake of a smaller but still frightening earthquake. Let the conspiracy theories abound!

The REAL story here.

Scared Panda May Be The Cutest Animal To Ever Exist

CC1BC60A-0920-42EA-BAEF-ED6D94199D71.jpg

From the immense tragedy in Japan comes one small, miniscule silver lining: this photo, which may be the cutest EVER. I don’t normally post cute crap, but I couldn’t resist this. It’s a scared panda hugging his zookeeper’s leg after the earthquake.

Let me repeat that.

IT’S A SCARED PANDA HUGGING HIS ZOOKEEPER’S LEG AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE.

This is better than that picture of the seal cub I once saw lying on its side — a high benchmark if there ever was one.

As a cute bonus, check out a guy with lions after the jump.

CELEBRITY APPRENTICE PHOTOCAP: One For The Books

celeb-apprentice-16.jpg

It just gets better. Celebrity Apprentice continues to be absolutely, unequivocally amazing. The second episode brought oodles of friction to the women’s team as the rift between Lisa and Star Jones full-on fissured into a great divide. Throw in a dash of egoism, courtesy of Dionne Warwick (not to mention some cheery ignorance about deaf people), and we had quite the clusterfuck on screen. Only one show could make Gary Busey dressed like an oversized child seem like an afterthought.

Brilliant, I tell you. BRILLIANT. Continue reading “CELEBRITY APPRENTICE PHOTOCAP: One For The Books”

Introducing Comment of the Week

In an effort to promote further activity on the site and community building and all that fun stuff, I’ve decided to introduce a Comment of the Week feature that will highlight some of the best and funniest contributions by you, my dear readers. Whoever is selected will have his or her quote featured on the sidebar for a whole week (oooooh!!) and will thus be able to use those bragging rights in whatever manner seems appropriate.

This week’s choice:

“I’m sorry, but if you leave out ‘Nobody puts Baby in the corner,’ you haven’t gotten to the heart of the movie at all. Germans!” — Joanna on ‘Dirty Dancing’ in Sixty Seconds, As Portrayed By Germans

After the jump, three other amusing comments. Continue reading “Introducing Comment of the Week”

ADVENTURES IN DOMESTICITY: Fun With Gourds, Afghani Style! (a.k.a. Kaddo Bourani)

My lovely friends Julia and Lindsey held a potluck dinner party last night with a Middle Eastern theme. I knew everyone would be bringing stuff like couscous and hummus and tagines, but I wanted to do something different and unexpected. That’s when I thought of Helmand, an Afghani restaurant in both Cambridge, MA and San Francisco, CA. I’ve been to each branch, and I’ve largely adored everything I’ve eaten there, but the big standout is a pumpkin dish called Kaddo Bourani (or Bowrani). It’s a sweet and savory combination of pumpkin, yogurt, and meat that works divinely together. In fact, after having done some research, it appears that Kaddo Bourani (or Kaddy B) is actually a signature dish for the restaurant AND the recipe is widely available online. Oh happy fun times. All I had to do was procure a pumpkin.

Uh.

Turns out pumpkins are impossible to find out of season; so I turned to that other reliable gourd: the butternut squash. Reviews online said that the dish works fine with butternut squash, but pumpkin’s really where it’s at. Alas, this would not be a faithful recreation, but I’d have to do my best.

My Afghani journey after the jump. Be warned: this is not a healthy dish. You might see some things that will turn your stomach just a tad… Continue reading “ADVENTURES IN DOMESTICITY: Fun With Gourds, Afghani Style! (a.k.a. Kaddo Bourani)”

REAL HOUSEWIVES OF MIAMI PHOTOCAP: Artistic Differences

HW-08.jpg

I’m happy to report that The Real Housewives of Miami is slowly getting its voice. The show still lacks the fun or urgency of out-of-the-box-hit Beverly Hills, but I gotta admit that writing about these women (and talking about them on Housewives Hoedown — Wednesdays at 12:30 PST!) is a blast. They don’t offer much, but with the flurry of accents and idiosyncrasies, it’s kind of a bonanza for me.

This week saw its first major altercation; although, regrettably it came not between two of the women. Instead the battlers were Adriana and some random dude at her gallery. Here’s the back story: Continue reading “REAL HOUSEWIVES OF MIAMI PHOTOCAP: Artistic Differences”
