Did Lady Antebellum Plagiarize The Alan Parsons Project?

File this one under “Scandals involving musicians I don’t care about.” I may not be a fan of Lady Antebellum nor a particular devotee of The Alan Parsons Project, but I do love catching musicians in the act of improper acts — particularly in regards to intellectual property. Turns out that Lady Antebellum’s big hit, “Need You Now,” may have been ripped off from the ’80s hit “Eye In The Sky” by The Alan Parsons Project. One person went so far as to mash up both songs (see above video) for comparison. It’s hard to tell if this was intentional theft or just a coincidental quirk from the realm of boring music, but either way, the similarities are striking.

ADVENTURES IN DOMESTICITY: Strange Flavored Chicken Edition

DSC00668.jpg

I recently purchased Fuchsia Dunlop’s Sichuan cookbook Land of Plenty and have been slowly working my way through various recipes (see pics from my first few tries here). So far I’ve been happy with the results, but it wasn’t until I took on Strange Flavored Chicken that I felt I had truly hit a home run. This dish is so easy and flavorful that I can already see it becoming a staple in my “What do I make now?” repertoire.

THE QUAFF: Sun Gold Zinger Edition

DSC00635.jpg

For the past several months, my friend Sly and I have been trying to see the film Winter’s Bone, but thanks to Sly’s unpredictable nature, we were never able to nail down a time to see the flick in the theaters, and thus we missed it. Thankfully, the DVD arrived in my mailbox last week, courtesy of Netflix, which meant we could finally watch the damn movie. Making matters even more exciting was the arrival of a free bottle of Stoli vodka, which had been sent to me for review by the good people of Stolichnaya. Free booze + a long anticipated DVD viewing? Sounded like a recipe for fun.

Even more thrilling was the revelation that Stoli happened to be Sly’s favorite vodka. Her swoons of joy were unparalleled in nature except for perhaps the deep mating call of a restless penguin. We soon got to work fixing an intriguing cocktail from Paul Abercrombie’s Organic, Shaken, and Stirred. This little number was called the Sun Gold Zinger and featured cherry tomatoes, lemon juice, salt, agave nectar, and vodka. Sure, it didn’t quite fit thematically with a film about Appalachian poverty, but we really didn’t care. We were intrigued: would this be a second-ran Bloody Mary or a fine concoction that could stand on its own? Results after the jump…

QUICK HIT: Guess Who’s Joining The Cast Of Glee? (Hint: It’s Not Gwyneth Paltrow)

glee-gwyneth-paltrow.jpg

The Gleeks were out in force last night on Facebook, unanimously praising the Gwyneth Paltrow episode with exclamation-points and raves. There’s so much buzz about the ep, in fact, that it makes the last buzzworthy Glee moment — an a cappella version of “Teenage Dream” — seem almost like… a dream (perhaps a teenage one). Well, don’t forget about it too quickly. Big news from the casting desk. A new cast member’s been signed through the rest of the season. Click here to find out who…

REAL HOUSEWIVES PHOTOCAP: Do You Hear What I Hear?

11-16-2010-HW-15.jpg

Exciting news! This past week’s episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills brought us our first non-sisterly fight of the season, and it was just as awkward and catty as you can imagine! Camille Grammer and Kyle Richards tried to clear the air about a perceived comment regarding Camille’s appeal without Kelsey. The issue at hand was whether or not Kyle ever said anyone would care about Camille sans super famous husband. Kyle claimed she had never and WOULD never say such a thing. Camille maintained that she heard those words come out of her very mouth. It was hard to tell who was wrong, and who was right. What’s particularly unclear was why neither woman could admit that clearly there was a miscommunication and just move on. Instead, even after “resolving” their issue, the two women still privately and bitterly kept their grudges, and so it was no surprise that twenty minutes later, their fight erupted again on a much larger, ridiculous scale.

Robyn DJs in Hollywood; Fun Times Ensue

DSC00648.jpg

Not too long ago, I received an invite to an intimate performance by international pop star Robyn at the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood. I didn’t know what to expect, and even though I only knew a smattering of Robyn’s songs, I knew I had to check it out based on all the buzz I’d seen about her on Facebook on a near-daily basis. For those of you scratching your head, Robyn is a Swedish singing sensation who actually first invaded American radio in the late nineties with songs such as “Show Me Love” and “Do You Know (What It Takes).” She fell off the pop culture radar for a while before quietly reemerging about five years ago on the indie pop scene, thanks in part to her ongoing success overseas. No longer a teen star, Robyn seemed to gain critical acclaim and hipster momentum with each passing month, and lately, she’s been everywhere, including a performance on the MTV Video Music Awards this year as well as a random Gossip Girl cameo where she was shoehorned into the action for no discernible reason (which is kind of the way all the cameos go on that series).

Anyway, with Robyn-mania reaching a fever-pitch, I knew I had to drop by this event, especially since I was told I’d get to interview and take a picture with her. The opportunities for Facebook bragging were through the charts! Sadly though, Robyn was a bit under the weather; so I didn’t get to interact with her. However, I did spend a solid hour standing extremely close to her while she DJ’d for a crowd; so that was cool. That’s right: I’m boasting about being in the geographical vicinity of a pop star. Hey, it’s all I have.

iTunes Unleashes One of Its Most Bizarre Free Downloads — UPDATED

The buzz today is that The Beatles have finally come to iTunes. Yeah, yeah, yeah — that’s cool and everything, but what truly got my attention instead was the bizarre and catchy free Discovery Download. It’s a song called “Baby Monkey (Going Backwards on a Pig)” by Parry Gripp. Listed under “Children’s Music” and with a run-time of only fifty-six seconds, I was kind of pissed off at iTunes at first. Really? You’re going to give us a song that’s less than a minute long as one of the two English-language free downloads of the week? And a CHILDREN’S SONG, no less? Seemed like a rip-off (sort of like the time they once offered up a song called “Tacit” that was two and a half minutes of SILENCE). But then I sampled “Baby Monkey (Going Backwards on a Pig),” and I had to admit it was kind of catchy. Annoying, but catchy. Intrigued, I went to YouTube and listened to the full song. It’s totally weird and ridiculous, but… I had to download it. Besides, you gotta love that name (and the underlying sense that the tune was most likely conceived in an altered state).

So for those of you who want a brief, strange addition to your iTunes library, be sure to click the following link anytime before next Tuesday (11/23/10). It’s free until then!

Baby Monkey (Going Backwards on a Pig) by Parry Gripp

UPDATE: Apparently the song’s popularity and inspiration stems from a viral video. This all makes much more sense now. Thanks to everyone for the heads up. Video after the jump… Continue reading “iTunes Unleashes One of Its Most Bizarre Free Downloads — UPDATED”

REAL HOUSEWIVES PHOTOCAP: Dancing With The Divorcées

11-15-2010-HW-05.jpg

After last week’s near Sherayay-free episode of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, I’m proud to report that our favorite divorcée was back front and center on last night’s show. A local charity fundraiser had called upon Ms. Whitfield to perform in an event called “Dancing Stars of Atlanta,” which afforded the budding thespian a chance to expand her repertoire to beyond the proscenium and onto the ballroom floor. I’m can assuredly report that her footwork was just as expressive as her acting.

ADVENTURES IN DOMESTICITY: Homemade Kimchi from Cham Korean Bistro Edition

DSC00570.jpg

It’s no secret that I absolutely adore Korean food. I eat it, I cook it, and I watch stupid videos about it on YouTube. So you can imagine my joy when I was invited to participate in a Make-Your-Own-Kimchi experience organized by Cham Korean Bistro, a modern Korean restaurant in Pasadena. Apparently I would get to learn how to make kimchi, and take home my very own batch. Plus, there’d be Korean tapas and bossam (my new favorite Korean dish) and cocktails. You had me at hello, Cham. You had me at hello.

Second Meeting With Ina Garten Proves To Be Short and Sweet

51ePKXozqnL._SS500_.jpg

Two years ago, I stood in line for many hours all for the opportunity to meet Ina Garten during a signing for her cookbook Back to Basics. Well, now she has a new book out (How Easy Is That?), and of course, that meant she was back in town to meet and greet the fans yet again. Like the devotee that I am, I trekked on back to Santa Monica and stood in line for two hours with seemingly every housewife and her daughter in the Los Angeles county environs. Luckily, I wasn’t alone this time: my friend Andrea — a fellow Ina fiend — joined up with me, and together we got to assault Ina with our praise and adoration. Of course, we really wanted to tell her to fix her damn show, but that would have been rude, and who can be rude to Ina? She’s just this wonderful little ball of giggles and joy! Barbara Lieberman on the other hand…

Anyway, after the jump are some pics from my second and Andrea’s first interaction with The Barefoot Contessa…
