There are like ten people out there who think tomorrow will be the end of the world — or rather, The Rapture — and while I’m skeptical, I’ve still taken five minutes to compile the ultimate End of Days playlist. After the jump, check out the the ten best songs for the apocalypse!
10. “When The World Ends” — Dave Matthews Band
I just really like Dave Matthews and felt obligated to add him to this list. In general though, this isn’t one of my favorite songs of his; although, it is VERY timely.
9. “Rapture” — Blondie
Feels appropriate.
8. “Time For Miracles” — Adam Lambert
It’s the theme song to 2012, the most apocalyptic-y apocalypse movie of our time!
7. “The Final Countdown” — Europe
Not sure this is really a doomsday song, but it seems fitting.
6. “So Long, Farewell” — Von Trapp kids
See “The Final Countdown,” above.
5. “Till The End of Time” — Mariah Carey
In this song, Mariah coos that she will “love you ’till the end of time,” and that might be tomorrow; so… have a fun night, Nick Cannon?
4. “99 Luftballons” — Nena
Did you know that “99 Luftballons” (a.k.a. 99 Red Balloons) is really a song about the end of the world? WELL IT IS. Yay!
3. “It’s The End of the World As We Know It” — REM
Pretty self-explanatory.
2. “Till The World Ends” — Britney Spears
Britney’s catchiest song since “Womanizer” is also the most appropriate! “Dance until the world ends,” or rather, “Dance until tomorrow at around 3pm-ish.” That has a nice ring to it.
1. “1999” — Prince
Sure, the doomsday prophecies never came true about the year 2000, but Prince still has the most fun apocalyptic tune out there.
Bonus song: “Who Will Save Your Soul” by Jewel. I would have put this in the top ten had I remembered it when I was writing this post. Oops:
What songs would you add to the list?
hmm, the more music countdown posts you do the more i realize you have terrible music countdown taste.
Hey, it’s not like this is Pitchfork or anything.
I think your song choices are great – anyone happen to know 3PM whose time?
Will never be able to hear Final Countdown by Europe without thinking about Gob from Arrested Development. Oh, the drama. The intensity.

That shit was so funny. I miss that show so much.
I heard it will be at 6pm when and where it is 6pm. There is to be a massive earthquake and the “saved” dead people will be taken up to heaven while the rest of us will just watch I guess. I will be drinking Skinny Girl Margaritas.
“while the rest of us will just watch I guess”……….bwaaahaaahaaaa. I just spit my beer out.
APPARENTLY, now that preacher has moved the time to 11:00……so, yeah.
As soon as we got in the car yesterday, the radio was playing R.E.M.’s “It’s The End of the World (as we know it)”. I thought it was very appropriate and it reminds me of dime beer night at Sophie’s (a long-forgotten UVA bar) when I drunkenly danced to the song. Good times.
