Since Los Angeles Top-40 radio stations are perennially six weeks behind the rest of the country, I’m only now discovering the pure joy of a pop confection known simply as “Call Me Maybe.” The song, which is in iTunes’ top ten (and notably #74 on KIIS-FM Los Angeles’s playlist), might be described by the casual observer as “vapid” or “ridiculous.” But to me, I call it nothing short of SHEER GENIUS.
Sure, Carly Rae Jepsen’s mere name might make you want to go running for the hills, and sure she might be the protege of The Biebs, but don’t let this pseudo-Michelle Trachtenberg scare you. The only thing you should fear is the song’s hook taking up permanent residence in your head for the next several weeks.
Nevertheless, after the jump, check out five surprisingly fun and charming tributes to “Call Me Maybe,” including one co-starring Justin Bieber himself!
5. The Frat Boy Semi Response Video
I’m not sure if this video is a response to Carly, a remix of Carly, or just a guy singing because he wants to sing (probably all three), but the production values are slick (as far as amateur stuff goes), and again, it’s gleeful fun, even if it is totally dopey.
4. Glozell
You know you’ve made it when GloZell takes the time out of her busy schedule to give a play-by-play of your video. Warning: Carly Rae Jepsen video spoilers ahead (not to mention some very valuable civil rights lessons)!
3. The A-Bunch-Of-Guys-Bored-In-Their-College-Dorm-Lipsync-Fest
Whenever there’s a new pop sensation on the charts, the first to lipsync it are not the gays (of which I am one), but in fact college guys bored in their dorms (also into this stuff: deployed soldiers bored in the barracks). Here’s a group going to town on the tune. These guys better enjoy their moment in the spotlight because it’ll only be a matter of time before seven glitter-covered, Speedo-wearing dudes from West Hollywood release their own music video.
2. “Call Me Maybe” Cover By CIMORELLI
This appears to be an a cappella group of some sort. The arrangement is actually pretty good.
1. Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ashley Tisdale, and some guys from Big Time Rush Dance to “Call Me Maybe”
This is the video that inspired countless tweens to follow suit. Justin, Selena, and Ash (I use their first names because we’re all besties in my head) take to the webcam with their friends and dance the night away. Truth be told, these kids look like they’re having so much fun, it’s hard to not find their enthusiasm infectious. I don’t know about you guys, but the silliness of it all takes me right back to high school. Could this possibly be my favorite Bieber production?

Is it wrong for me to think this post was related to the Hunger Games when I saw the word “tribute?”
I am so sick of this song! Carly Rae was on Canadian Idol back in the day and I have disliked her since then…
@ Char – Gulp. I not only watched her on Canadian Idol, I voted for her. I find it so funny that she’s become an “overnight sensation” once the Biebs heard her. He probably didn’t see her on Canadian Idol, because he wasn’t allowed to watch TV in daycare.
That song is SO catchy. Now it’s stick in my head. Know what else is stuck in my head? The hot dude in the video. After a little googling I found out his name is Holden Nowell and apparently he really is gay. HUGE let down. Glozell has the right idea. I’m marrying him anyway.
@ Evenshorter57 – That is funny! I believe I liked Greg and Brian, but I never actually voted. I miss Canadian Idol… mainly just for Ben Mulroney.
Justin Bieber would have been about 13 when that show was on… I would love if he had watched it and been a fan since then hahaha.
I can’t even recall why I disliked her so much… I couldn’t watch her perform… between her facial expressions and body language!! It is a memory that sticks with me to this day 😛
Nooooooooooooooooo!
That was a cruel and cunning trick. I had somehow managed to escape hearing this “singing sensation” until now. Now I know what that annoying song my coworkers have been chanting/mumbling/screeching is about. I didn’t truly value my ignorance of pop music until now.
Y’all stop hating! They did nothing wrong! If you dont like them keep it to yourself, and dont put people down with your stupid envy in disguise. Justin Bieber discovered Carly Rae because he thinks she has talent (which she does). So STOP THE HATE!
