The buzz today is that The Beatles have finally come to iTunes. Yeah, yeah, yeah — that’s cool and everything, but what truly got my attention instead was the bizarre and catchy free Discovery Download. It’s a song called “Baby Monkey (Going Backwards on a Pig)” by Parry Gripp. Listed under “Children’s Music” and with a run-time of only fifty-six seconds, I was kind of pissed off at iTunes at first. Really? You’re going to give us a song that’s less than a minute long as one of the two English-language free downloads of the week? And a CHILDREN’S SONG, no less? Seemed like a rip-off (sort of like the time they once offered up a song called “Tacit” that was two and a half minutes of SILENCE). But then I sampled “Baby Monkey (Going Backwards on a Pig),” and I had to admit it was kind of catchy. Annoying, but catchy. Intrigued, I went to YouTube and listened to the full song. It’s totally weird and ridiculous, but… I had to download it. Besides, you gotta love that name (and the underlying sense that the tune was most likely conceived in an altered state).
So for those of you who want a brief, strange addition to your iTunes library, be sure to click the following link anytime before next Tuesday (11/23/10). It’s free until then!

UPDATE: Apparently the song’s popularity and inspiration stems from a viral video. This all makes much more sense now. Thanks to everyone for the heads up. Video after the jump…
this youtube version is even better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_sfnQDr1-o&feature=player_embedded
i can’t believe it was the free download though!
explain me this: how can something that’s FREE be a rip-off?
Beatles coming to iTunes wasn’t cool, it was f**&%ing LAME.
I actually agree. I just didn’t want to start a riot.
Everyone has their pirated Beatles mp3s by now anyway.
Great. Now I’m in the mood for a riot.
I still have my vinyl Beatles.
