‘Community’ Has Won Me Over

Before Community premiered last week, I had some concerns. All the promotional clips NBC had sent out were kind of… well… just okay. Still, I like to check out new comedy, and the New York Times gave the show a good review; so I watched the first episode earlier this week and kind of loved it. The banter is fast, snarky, and very smart. Plus, the fact that so much of the show takes place in a study group, the emphasis seems to be on funny dialogue, which is a great (and welcome) callback to the sitcoms of yore. But would be Community be a one hit wonder? No. Turns out the second episode was just as hilarious, and with the addition of Ken Jeong (the crazy Asian dude in every movie these days, viz. The Hangover), the show just got even better. In fact, I’m tempted to say it’s the best new comedy of the fall (and I know everyone LOVES Modern Family — which is also very funny). Nevertheless, in the clip above, Jeong makes his debut on the show with a daffy monologue that he pretty much owns. I was never a particularly huge fan of his, but I might have to rethink that now.
Have you seen Community? What do you think of it?

  1. Yup. This show has been killing it. I was watching this with a friend & we were dying!
Señor Chang rules the school. So much so, that I had to change my avatar on a certain website down the dial.
    You got bit!!!

  2. eh… i kept on thinking that it should be funnier that it is. I don’t think i laughed one time last night while watching it. Unfortunate because i love Joel Mchale. The office was hilarious last night though 🙂
I have to say i love modern family so much more than community. We’ll see how the seasons progress…

  3. As I watched “Community” I kept smiling and thinking “that was funny but why am I not laughing out loud”. Then I realized THERE’S NO LAUGH TRACK TELLING ME IT’S FUNNY! “Right there! That was a clever aside. Why don’t I hear laughter?”
So, until they start adding a laugh track I’ll continue to watch “Community” and enjoy the great writing. The first time I hear a laugh track I’m changing channels.

  4. Also adore it. Love how Joel McHale is bringing the Everyman to a smart, funny level.
My mom works at a community college and says that the characters and overall environment of the show are completely accurate.
I like how Britta got taken down a notch this week too. I wish that would happen more to Dan on Gossip Girl–maybe then he wouldn’t be such a self-righteous douche.

  5. Being a child of the 80s, the show had me hooked at Abed’s rehash of the christmas piece from breakfast club. “Smoke up Johnny!”

  6. Love it its funny and Modern Family is good too but usually with Network TV, the funny good shows are the first ones canceled

  7. Community is definitely my new fave for the season along with Modern Family and Glee. I have always been a huge Scrubs fan and it kind of reminds me a bit of that. Just hope it sticks around.
Does Modern Family remind anyone else of AD? Mostly I am just excited to have Jesse Tyler Ferguson back on tv!
With all these new sitcoms I think I am actually watching more comedies than dramas these days. I am so over crime procedurals and doctor melodramas. Bring on the funny!
