When I read that Sanjaya would be poking fun of himself in a new Nationwide commercial, I felt optimistic that the affable yet untalented kid might finally enter some sort of post-annoying phase where we could enjoy him as a kind of neo-kitsch character, not unlike William Shatner or James Lipton.
