About two weeks ago, I implored people to submit their favorite musical covers from YouTube in order to win Glee Season 2: Volume 1 on DVD. There have been some great responses, and after weeding through the videos (with an assist from my friend Meeshie), we finally have a winner.
Results after the jump…
Third place:
Firefly submitted Scala’s haunting cover of Radiohead’s “Creep,” which has recently been made famous by the commercials for The Social Network. Love the original, love the cover. Not sure I’d load it on to my iPod but a solid cover nonetheless.
Second place:
The PS22 kids have become famous for their melodic covers of various rock artists (ie. Coldplay, Tori Amos, etc), and while I have to say I’m a bit over the whole gambit, even I had to appreciate this cover, submitted by Katie. The kids take on Passion Pit (which is cool on its own) and bring a lovely sweetness to what is normally a cheery, frenetic song. The tune in question is “Let Your Love Grow Tall,” and yes, I did download it about ten minutes after viewing these two videos.
First Place
Drummmm roll….
Babysledge for submitting this:
It’s Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness” as covered by Lissie.
This selection won because it was the only pairing that made me want to download BOTH tracks (although; the Lissie one seems to be unavailable on iTunes). Furthermore, it’s easy to take an upbeat song, strip it down, and let the power of an acoustic performance take over. What’s not easy is taking something low-tempo and taking it into an anthemic realm. Lissie does just that with this cover, bringing an entirely new sound to what was previously just an (awesomely) trippy and chill track. And now the song is in my head.
Congrats, babysledge! Email me with your info, and I’ll send the DVDs off to you!
AGREED!!
Does anyone else think Santana looks like Kim Kardashian?
