Thursday nights usually mean one thing for me: 30 Rock, Community, Real Housewives, and Jersey Shore — give or take a few shows. I suppose that’s four things, but it all falls under the glorious umbrella of TELEVISION. It certainly takes a lot for me to waiver from this joyous activity, but occasionally something does come along that even TV itself can’t top. Case in point: TV on stage! That’s why when my friend Michelle invited me along to see The Pee-Wee Herman Show last night, I knew I had to put Snooki, Vicki, and Liz Lemon on pause.
For the uninitiated, The Pee-Wee Herman Show is sort of a reprisal of Paul Reubens’ beloved ’80s kids show, Pee-Wee’s Playhouse (which in turn was something of an adaptation of his early ’80s stage show, also called The Pee-Wee Herman Show). It’s been garnering a significant amount of buzz here in LA for the past week or so, and even though we had to navigate through the byzantine corridors and garages of downtown’s LA Live complex (an experience that Michelle and I equated to some horrid Amazing Race impasse), we were still most happy to arrive at Club Nokia, the swanky venue for this off-off-off-off Broadway performance. The icing on the cake: free tix located second row center. Enormous thanks to the staff for hooking us up with that.
As we took our seats in the audience, it was clear that this would not be the typically stuffy theatRE experience. I based this mainly on the fact that a good number of people in the audience seemed to actually be dressed up as Pee-Wee Herman, and those in civilian garb tended to have some ode to the man or his menagerie of characters imprinted on their clothing in some fashion. Heck, the woman next to me had a full-on Pee-Wee doll in her hands.
If it was nostalgia these people wanted, they certainly received it on a high order. The moment Pee-Wee first waltzed out on stage with nothing but a dark curtain behind him, the crowd went nuts. Reubens, now nearly sixty years old, seems shockingly ageless when he inhabits his famous character. Sure, there are some wrinkles and lines here and there, but hidden under layers of thick white makeup, and wrapped up in the man-child mania of Pee-Wee, he truly seems no older than he was twenty-five years ago.

Ah, but Pee-Wee is just the tip of the iceberg. Back again for this latest production are all our favorite characters from our youth — Magic Screen, Cowboy Curtis, and my favorite (both as a kid and in last night’s show) Chairy. It’s all manic craziness, and the entire spectacle takes place in a meticulous recreation of the Playhouse — one that proves to be quite impressive from a production standpoint. With characters floating down from the rafters, cartoon interludes, and puppets up the wazoo, it’s all a rather involved experience — and one that goes off without a hitch (even if Pee-Wee did trip and fall at one point).
In terms of plot, I can’t say there’s much of one, and yet there is. The whole thing seems like general craziness at first, but then a surprisingly sweet story emerges from the fray, culminating in a truly hilarious and inventive final scene. I’m not sure, however, that one goes to The Pee-Wee Herman Show for a compelling narrative. It’s really all about taking in the incredible visual display, laughing at the surreal yet sly jokes, and screaming whenever anyone says the Secret Word (which happens quite frequently).
Anyway, everything was all good and fun and lovely, and afterwards, Michelle and I meandered up to the VIP lounge (which is obviously apt for us) where we not only encountered fellow cyber-denizens Lyndsey Parker and Matt Whitfield, but we also hobnobbed with the one and only Jambi! That’s right, he of the floating head was walking amongst us, which brings me finally to the entire point of this post: we got a picture with Jambi! So take it in, AMERICA.
All in all — a wonderful, trippy evening. For more details (and photos), check out Michelle’s review at bestweekever.tv!

  1. Awesome! I actually got my kids some Peewee’s Playhouse DVD’s and they love it just as much as I did when I was a kid. The songs at the beginning and end of each episode takes me right back to the days when I’d ride around in the station wagon without a seatbelt on and I’d be constantly sick to my stomach from putting too much syrup on my pancakes. Memories.

  2. I have to admit that I, too, have the Pee Wee Herman doll. I got it for graduation (my college graduation) from my sister. He is still with us, he now keeps watch over the VHS tapes, assorted college textbooks and albums we have on our bookshelf. I would have loved to see this show as I never missed a show when it was on TV. Even if we were hungover as shit and didn’t scream real loud when the secret word was said.
